Jindal Pitches Higher Ed Funding Increase, with Workforce Training Program

After several years of inflicting cuts, Bobby Jindal is set to increase state higher education funding in next year's budget. The gov announced Tuesday that he is set to propose a $141.5 million increase in state-run colleges and universities for next fiscal year, which marks a 6.66 percent increase for 2013-14. More than a quarter of that money will go toward a program that provides money to colleges to partner with private industry, and implement workforce training programs for jobs in Louisiana's biggest economic sectors like oil & gas and manufacturing.

The Department of Justice’s inquiry and potential shutdown of Louisiana’s school voucher program brought in more political heat this week, but this time it went all the way up to the Speaker. Six GOP Congressional leaders, including Speaker of the House John Boehner, called out Attorney General Eric Holder and the DOJ for bringing desegregation into a legal inquiry about the state voucher program backed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, calling the claim “troubling and paradoxical.”

The Supreme Court sent the case back to the District Court for further proceeding, according to the ruling.
