Today in NOLA: 1.18.15

Start the day by honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Continue your Sunday by listening to a tribute to Danny Barker. At sunset, Quintron will play the weather, and then in the evening, Big Freedia will cut it up downtown. On this day in 1962, Southern University, the South’s largest HBCU, closed after the majority of students protested the expulsion of sit-in participants. Now, more to do this Sunday.

Celebrating Strings

Danny Barker Festival Honors Legend

The past week has been filled with announcements of music in the future. One festival is focused on looking back on the New Orleans’ music’s past. The Danny Barker Festival will honor a local icon through Sunday (1.18).

Prelude to Danny Barker

Fest Before the Fest Honors NOLA Music Legend

Tonight and tomorrow, string players will honor the legendary Danny Barker in a prelude to the January 2015 festival bearing his name. Tonight and tomorow, shows will honor the man at Snug Harbor and the Old U.S. Mint. Barker's influence on New Orleans is immeasurable. The banjo player influencer musicians ranging from Leroy Jones to Derrick Tab. He helped start a social aid and pleasure club, made brass cool to a new generation, and preserved the legacy of the past. It is only fitting NOLA will celebrate him twice.

Today's Events: 1.13.12

Put away your silverware, it's Friday the 13th. But what could go wrong when Anita Hill talks Fair Housing, Styx is sailing away to the House of Blues, David Allan Coe laments downtown and Helen Gillet and Clint Maedgen team up in the Marigny. And who would offend the day the St. Philip St. Theatre was opened between Royal and Bourbon (1818) and the birthday of the late local jazz legend Danny Barker (1909). See, there's no reason to be worried. Now check some more details out:
