Dalai Lama's Keynote: The Path to Peace in NOLA

by John Hagan

Addressing varied topics such as global climate change, growing income disparity, gun control, and his favorite foods (this is New Orleans after all), Tenzin Gyatso, the XIV Dalai Lama brought his message of compassion and peace to New Orleans, a city in desperate need of both.

All day long, find some inner peace with lectures, bus tours, cultural performances, and more in honor of the Dalai Lama’s inaugural NOLA visit. Get your fill of sax at the Ogden’s after hours event this evening, and head to NOMA’s Sculpture Garden for some Shakespeare from The NOLA Project. On this day in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor. Now, more to do this Thursday.

Dalai Lama Makes Debut Trip to NOLA for Week of Peace and Performance

After Sunday’s tragic mass mother’s day shooting in the 7th Ward, New Orleans could use a peaceful reminder.  This weekend, the city is in luck.  Taking a break from the mountains of Tibet, the high lama himself, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, takes a seat at the Convention Center to share ideas of compassion, equanimity and non-violence in his debut trip to the Crescent City.

As you recover from your weekend, ease into work with regular gigs from Oak to St. Claude, a Dalai Lama film series on Oretha Castle Haley, and a signing of Julia Reed’s new culinary adventure chronicle. On this day in 1864, Union troops burned Alexandria to the ground. Now, more to do this Monday.
