The rest of America is continuing to affirm what we already knew: the food in NOLA is great. On Monday (5.02) evening, tasterati gathered in Chicago for the annual James Bear Awards, the Oscars of the restaurant industry. New Orleans chefs took home three big honors.


RIP Paul Prudhomme


Culinary pioneer Paul Prudhomme died today at the age of 75-years-old. Prudhomme is often credited with popularizing Creole and Cajun cuisine with a national audience. In New Orleans, the chef held court at his restaurant K-Paul’s and nationally he gained acclaimed through cooking shows on PBS.


Commander's Says Oops


Commander’s Palace is proud of their heritage. Menus, plaques, and even floor tiles in the iconic Garden District restaurant tout the establishment’s founding in 1880. The only problem is that the restaurant began operating in 1890.


We Live to Eat! Restaurant Week Kicks Off In NOLA


One could argue that every week is Restaurant Week in New Orleans, but next week, they’d be right. We Live to Eat Restaurant Week kicks off this Monday, September 8, and runs through the Sunday the 14th. Local heavyweights like Antoine’s, Emeril’s, Commander’s, and Ruth’s Chris are set to participate, as well as newcomers like Booty’s and Mizado Cocina.

Tory McPhail of Commander's Palace Wins James Beard Award


Around New Orleans, the JazzFest hangover is in full effect. But a handful of Crescent City culinary craftsman went right from the busy weekend up to New York City for the annual James Beard Foundation Awards (livestream here) . As is usually the case at the "Oscars of the food world," the pickers didn't leave out New Orleans as Chef Tory McPhail of Commander's Palace brought home some hardware, and Emeril was honored for his philanthropy.

From almost a dozen nods in the semfinals, five New Orleans interests have made the final cut for the James Beard Awards, set to be given out on May 6 in New York City. New Orleans once again outpaces the rest of the region in the Best Chef: South category, and will see one of her own earn recognition for giving something back.


Jamie Galloway, Beloved Musician and Chef, Passes at 41


James ‘Jamie’ Galloway III, a musician and chef beloved on Oak Street, died Friday. He was 41. From Baton Rouge to the Riverbend people are turning to one another to remember and honor their friend, who was known for his big heart and gentle, loving personality.


Vine Dining: Commander's Palace Pairs Wines for Six-Course Dinner


Most locals use special occasions as an excuse to eat at Commander's Palace (1403 Washington Avenue), but tonight the fine-dining folks are throwing their own celebration. After receiving the Grand Award from Wine Spectator magazine, they’re putting on a series of wine nights to showcase some of the world’s best vineyards. They’re starting with “The Calling,” tonight, highlighting four fine wines out of Sonoma County, California.
