Central City Oasis

Learn About New Tiki Bar, Portside Lounge

Stepping inside from the afternoon’s searing lime white sun, it took a moment of adjustment to fully take in the impressively subtle tiki decor and turquoise colors of Portside Lounge, Central City’s newest neighborhood spot nestled a few lakeside blocks from the St. Charles streetcar line. Yet after taking a seat at the bar with owner Danny Nick and head bartender Rachel Rose, everything came into full view.

Cinco de Mayo Cocktails (Recipes)

Happy Cinco de Mayo! NoDef has already shared the best spots around New Orleans to celebrate with live music, tacos, and of course a drink or two. For the more introverted celebrants, there are still plenty of ways to get down from the comfort of your own kitchen. NoDef's pals at the Mexican-born William Grant & Sons offered up a few suggestions for cocktails featuring traditional spirits like tequila, mezcal, and Ancho Reyes. ¡Salud!

Libation Nation

Recipes for National Cocktail Day

Like most New Orleanians, the NoDef team enjoys a good cocktail ... or two, or three. The great thing about living in the Big Easy is that we really don't need any excuses to drink, but that doesn't stop us from finding new reasons all the same. (Cue today's Bourbon Festival and this month's absinthe celebration, for instance.) This Friday (3.24) is National Cocktail Day, the holiest of days for all fans of being spirited away. Today, mix up all-star cocktails with these recipes culled from NoDef interviews with NOLA's finest bartenders from years past.

Bitter Sweet

Negroni Week Begins

In New Orleans, we really don’t need any excuses to drink, but that doesn’t stop us from finding new reasons all the same. For example, for the next five days, we will be celebrating Negroni Week. As part of a national charity campaign sponsored by Campari and Imbibe Magazine, bars across the United States will be serving this classic Italian aperitivo cocktail and donating $1 or more to charity. Here in the Crescent City, the United States Bartenders’ Guild and Tales of the Cocktail have partnered to support the New Orleans Musicians’ Assistance Foundation, a nonprofit providing medical assistance to local musicians.

Emeril's Carnival Cocktails (Recipes)

What is Carnival without a cocktail… or three? In honor of the season, the folks at Emeril’s New Orleans restaurants are rolling out some Mardi Gras specials on their list of libations. If you’re too busy with glue gunning your costume to make it out for a drink, you can still enjoy one at home. Recipes follow.

Hydration Station

Three Cocktails To Fight the August Heat From Nick Detrich

There are many ways to fight the August heat: pools, hydration, air conditioning, etceteras. At NoDef HQ, our chosen heat-beater is an adult beverage. So, we turned to  to our preferred publican, Nick Detrich of Cane & Table (113 Decatur Street) for some suggestions.

Mixing It Up: DeGroff & Dobard to Sing and Speak at MOTAC

Fresh off the opening of Ryan Hughes’ Purloo, The Museum of the American Cocktail (MOTAC) is hosting a talk with a couple of their bold faced name supporters. Today (1.16), the center announced that at 6:30p.m. on February 5, they will host the NOLA debut of “King Cocktail in Story and Song: Dale DeGroff in Conversation with Philip Dobard” as well as grand rededication ceremony.

The Bloody Jerk (Recipe)

New Year’s Eve done right can leave revelers feeling a little dehydrated on New Year’s Day. For those trying to make the most of the holiday, a trip to the well is often in order. One of the most popular cocktails to kick off the new year is the Bloody Mary. Nick Detrich of Cane & Table (1113 Decatur Street) gave us the recipe for his favorite variation on the classic.

St. John's Eve at Int'l House Hotel Features Ritual, Spirit

A CBD hotel is marking the High Holy Day in the voodoo faith Friday. To celebrate the event, the International House Hotel (221 Camp St.) is hosting a spiritual ritual led by Sally-Ann Glassman. In front of an alter dedicated to Marie Laveau, Glassman will be leading a circle of fellow voodoo practitioners, dressed all in white, in song and dance along with a spiritual head washing. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Beyond Campari: Negroni Finale

Negroni Week is nearing the proverbial bottom of the glass. The cocktails for a cause fundraiser is set to end at midnight tonight, but before the event ends, one bar has a plan to agitate one last burst of donations. Downtown hotspot Cane & Table (1113 Decatur St.) is planning a fire sale this evening.
