2 Missing After Explosion at Gulf of Mexico Oil Platform

Updated 7:30 p.m.

Not even 24 hours after BP admitted guilt for the Big Oozy, another oil facility explosion and fire was reported in the Gulf of Mexico. Dome Defect: BP Says Sheen is From New Oil Leak Near Macondo Well

BP thinks the latest Gulf oil is coming from a leaky dome. According to a statement released Thursday afternoon, the sheen discovered above the Deepwater Horizon on Sept. 16 is seeping small globules of oil out of a containment dome that was used in one of the company's many ineffective attempts to cap the Macondo well. The structure is not currently in use, BP said.

New information released by a pair of environmental groups today is showing that the Stolthaven New Orleans petroleum and chemical storage and transfer terminal in the badly-flooded Plaquemines Parish community of Braithwaite has leaked more than 191,000 gallons of toxic chemicals. Just one day after the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality publicly released a statement that the facility had no contamination, the company filed a report with the U.S. Coast Guard that showed quite the opposite, accoridng to the Louisiana Bucket Brigade and the Gulf Restoration Network.
