Mayor Mitch Landrieu's New Climate Action Strategy — And What It Means for New Orleans

Earlier this month, Mayor Mitch Landrieu released a Climate Action Strategy for the city of New Orleans. The comprehensive strategy aims to cut New Orleans’ greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and uphold the tenets of the Paris Climate Agreement. The plan builds off of 2015's Resilient New Orleans, which introduced a broad range of actions that continue to aid New Orleans in being less susceptible to hurricanes, heavy rain, crumbling infrastructure, and storm surge. Landrieu's new plan differs from any preceding urban plan in one key way: it's aggressive goal to prevent sea level rise, flooding, and other pollution costs.

It’s a big week of announcements for Mayor Mitch Landrieu. Just days after teaming with the New Orleans Police Department to propose a new pay plan for law enforcement, the mayor unveiled the city’s new climate action strategy. “Climate change is one of the greatest threats to our coastal communities, nation and world,” said Mayor Landrieu in a statement. The plan, titled Climate Action for a Resilient New Orleans, features 11 strategies and 25 actions to combat greenhouse gas emissions in the city over the next 13 years.

New Orleans, Toward Becoming A More Sustainable City

“It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature” was the ominously comical punch line delivered by the mock-maternal figure in Chiffon Margarine commercials of the 1970s.

For the folks living in denial regarding rising sea levels and similar issues related to climate change, maybe the message should be, “It’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature.”

Mayor Mitch Meets Pope, Talks Hope

Mayor Mitch spent his high school years as a Blue Jay, but this week he is meeting with the most famous Jesuit of them all: Pope Francis. Landrieu traveled to the Vatican for a conference on climate change, human trafficking, and sustainable development with other mayors and the Pontiff himself. On Wednesday (7.22), Landrieu dressed the group explaining NOLA’s challenges, victories, and lessons.

LETTERS: Plessy and Ferguson Foundation on Trayvon Martin Ruling, Culture and Climate

The great-great granddaugther of John Howard Ferguson, defendant in the landmark Civil Rights case Plessy v. Ferguson, weighs in on the Trayvon Martin ruling. Warren Senders offers his opinions on climate change as it relates to the unique culture of New Orleans.

NOLA Culture Leaders Speak Out on Climate Change

Global warming often conjures images of melting ice caps and smokestacks spewing soot. On Friday, a group of New Orleans cultural pillars put brass bands and New Orleans food in the conversation. Community leaders and climate change awareness activists flooded the docks at Mardis Gras World Friday afternoon to support the I Will #ActOnClimate campaign, and to discuss the potential impact of climate change on New Orleans.
