The evening hours of Valentine’s Day struck date night for many New Orleans couples, and on Friday many of them could be found at Mahalia Jackson Theater for the New Orleans Opera Association’s opening night of Cinderella.

This weekend, the New Orleans Opera Association puts on a charming and melodic four-act opera by French composer Jules Massenet--an 1899 work that made its U.S. premiere in New Orleans just over 111 years ago.

Tonight Hurray for the Riff Raff will be playing a sold out show at One Eyed Jacks, Byrdie’s Gallery will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Ghost “pottery Scene” Competition, and a play about Cinderella will be performed at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. On this date in Louisiana history, Hattie Caraway (D-Ark) was elected as the first female senator with the help of Louisiana’s Huey P. Long. Friday’s events are below: 

Cinderella Soiree Enchants Marigny Opera House

The cold weather has made New Orleanians well accustomed to slippers over the past few weeks. Even with the forecast thawing, the New Orleans Opera Association is set to raise the stakes with a pair of famous slippers of the glass variety. With the Association's production of Massenet's Cinderella set to arrive just in time for Valentine's Day, company members will preview the ball with a Marigny soiree on Saturday night (Feb. 8).
