Cathedral Christmas Concerts Commence


In New Orleasn, music is religion. And once a year, that mantra becomes a littlle more literal. Christmas New Orleans Style's holiday concerts in the St. Louis Cathedral begin again tonight (12.1) and continue though December 20th.

John Waters, Prince of Puke and the Pope of Trash is giving audiences at the Civic Theatre his take on the holidays. Christmas cheer continues in Jackson Square, with a free gospel concert from the Melody Clouds. On this day in 1860, then Governor Moore called a special session, calling for Louisiana to secede from the Union. Now, more to do this Tuesday.

The multi-talented gender bending Charles Busch is in New Orleans tonight, performing as part of NOCCA’s Broadway series. Beginning at 5 p.m., Pat O’s is celebrating their 80th birthday with a block party. On this day in 1861, Union troops landed on Ship Island. Now, more to do this Tuesday.

Who Dat! The Saints are in Seattle tonight for their game against the Seahawks. Christmas New Orleans Style continues at St. Louis Cathedral, and Planned Parenthood is screening "Deep South" at Cafe Istanbul in recognition of World AIDS Day. Happy Birthday to Britney Spears, the Louisiana pop princess and native of Kentwood. Spears turns 32 today. Now, more to do this Monday.

There’s a pair of second lines in Algiers and Treme, a New Orleans Style Christmas Concert in St. Louis Cathedral, and a costume contest for pets kicking off in the Warehouse District.  On this day in 1769, officials met for the first time in the Cabildo. Now, more ways to kick off Christmas NOLA style.

The holidays and church go hand-in-hand, but in the case of St. Louis Cathedral's December series, the union is in the service New Orleans' other higher power. Once again, exalted sounds and environs come together for a series of Christmas concerts in the sanctuary of the Jackson Square wonder. Click through for the full schedule:

Holiday music in New Orleans isn't limited to the choir at the mall or whatever prog CD is hot this year. Familiar or mysterious, and in places both exalted and earthly, the Crescent City dispatches its full arsenal of musical weapons to celebrate the season.

Group Wants Crescent City Christmas To Mean a Little Bit More



Sandwiched between two holidays that are heavy on costumes and implanted in the local DNA, Christmas and New Orleans are not necessarily synonymous. Heck, we don't even have snow.

 

But for a group responsible for putting on a pair of the city's largest festivals, there's plenty of opportunity in the pagan ritual to showcase local flare.
