Tonight, see some world-class pianists tickle the ivories at WWOZ's annual Piano Night. Experimental indie rockers Deerhunter are at One Eyed Jacks, plus there's weekly gigs from Frenchmen to Maple Street. Now, more to do this Monday.

City Plans Benefit for Wounded NOPD Officer John Passaro

After John Passaro was wounded by gunfire while responding to a Bywater robbery, the man that shot the NOPD officer is still at-large. Passaro remains in recovery after being shot multiple times while responding to the call at the Dollar General store on St. Claude Ave. and Poland. Now, it's time for the New Orleans community to do its part. The City announced plans for an April 17 benefit concert for Passaro at Generations Hall (310 Andrew Higgins Dr.).

Tonight, grab a beer on Oak with Papa Grows Funk, substitute toys for a cover charge to see brass at Café Istanbul, or head to Banks Street in Mid City for some free music and good eats. On this day in 1860, Louisiana’s Governor Moore called a special session to discuss seceding from the Union.

Today in New Orleans 11.26.12

Monday is back after the long weekend, and there’s no shortage of things to do in New Orleans to ease into the workweek. Old Crow Medicine Show is making a stop in the Big Easy, the art of funk is at Banks Street, and great local acts are performing all over the city. On this day in 1955, “Tutti Frutti,” by Lil’ Richard entered the R&B Charts. The track was written by native Dorothy LaBostrie and recorded in Cosimo Matassa’s Studio.

Today in New Orleans 8.27.12

Don’t let Isaac get you down, there’s still a lot to do this Monday night in NOLA. Support music education programs and see Dee Dee Bridgewater at Irvin Mayfield’s second week of Love Sessions, and see some weekly gigs from local favorites like Charmaine Neville and Papa Grows Funk. Servers and food service sympathizers, it’s your last chance to catch Waiting Around: The Restaurant Musical at the Allways. Two years ago today, Harry Connick Jr. appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live to discuss the federal flood’s anniversary on the national stage.

Today in New Orleans: 8.13.12

On August 13, 1947, Louis Armstrong and his All Stars Band officially debuted in Los Angeles, at Billy Berg’s Night Club. Tonight in the Louisiana music scene, Kermit Ruffins, Papa Grows Funk, and Charmaine Neville are populating their usual venues. Early in the evening, acclaimed author Kiini Ibura Salaam will be uptown at Octavia Books, reading passages from and signing her new collection, Ancient Ancient. Met-heads can check out Abigail Williams at the Hi-Ho with some Monday night red beans, and the Allways will be hosting The Salt Wives, a Klezmer trio.

Today in New Orleans: 6.24.12

Today, join a ton of New Orleans musicians in Westwego for Charmaine Neville’s benefit concert, tour the Garden District’s food scene on Bon Appétite’s Grub Crawl, take your kiddies to the circus in town, and show your pride on the last day of New Orleans Pride Week with a pub crawl. On this day in history, Fats Domino’s “It’s You I Love” entered the Billboard Top 40, reaching #6 (1957), Shreveport-native Brenton Wood’s “The Oogum Boogum Song” entered the Billboard Top 40 at #34 (1967), the Celebration of Life pop music festival started three days late at Cypress Point Plantation in Point Coupee Parish, LA, where starved and doped up music fans saw John Sebastian, Chuck Berry, Eric Burdon and War (1971).

Charmaine Event

All-Star New Orleans Lineup to Play for Charmaine Neville As She Continues to Recover From Rare Disease

Charmaine Neville’s high-energy performance style and her velvety voice have taken her around the world and landed her a steady gig at Snug Harbor. The singer stayed in the city during The Flood and her story received national media attention. Now, this member of New Orleans' first family of music is bringing her survivor attitude into her newest fight.

Today in New Orleans: 6.18.12

Today, the North Shore rallies for the Times-Pic, watch a documentary about Vito Russo for Pride Week, check out Charmaine Neville at Snug Harbor before her big benefit concert, and see some very loud and very hard rock music at Circle Bar. On this day in NOLA history, late drummer, composer and band leader Ray Bauduc was born (1906), and Rapper Silkk The Shocker was born(1975). Make your Monday plans here:
