Mirliton Festival Gets Country Club Kickoff, with Daiquirisby Emma Boyce It's almost time for the annual Bywater party that celebrates neighborhood ties and local vegetables: the Mirliton Festival. But before spreading out in Markey Park, fest fans are invited to relax poolside with a daiq. Tonight is the Mirliton Festival Kickoff Party, which aims to get everyone prepared for Mirliton madness, and introduce the world to a signature, delicious daiquiri: the Bywater Bomber. The party is hosted by the Bywater Neighborhood Association, and aims to continue the fest's mission of celebrating the rich Bywater culture. On Thursday, neighbors will gather in the Bywater to celebrate the planting of the 10,000th tree since the storm and floods of 2005 marred many of New Orleans’ landscapes. Mirliton MadnessBywater Festival Strikes a Gourd with LocalsIn Mexico folks call it chayote, and in the Caribbean it goes by christophene, but down in south Louisiana we know it as the mirliton. Whatever you call it, this little fruit is a big deal to many locals, though its reputation in the U.S. doesn’t extend far beyond the Gulf South. |
