Leaving it on the FloorHouse Trumps Senate to Claim Legislative Basketball CrownBATON ROUGE - Things got off to a rough n’ tumble start Wednesday night in the house that Pistol Pete built during the fourth annual “Hoopla,” a basketball game in which the two sides of the aisle square off in the name of charity. Hornets Return, Comedian "Runs" for OwnerTonight, the New Orleans Hornets return to the arena to face the Boston Celtics in their home-opener. As reported last week, canned music will be out replaced by Irvin Mayfield and a live jazz band playing local music courtside. We're in! Unfortunately, an owner is not in. Enter comedian Chris Trew of the New Movement. Trew, a NOLA native and lifelong Hornets fan, is running for owner of the team. His primary campaign tactic is producing a series of viral videos causing a stir on YouTube. Scotty Robertson PassesScotty Robertson, the first coach of the New Orleans Jazz, died yesterday in Ruston from an illness he suffered for the last years of his life, Da Paper reports. Robertson, 81, became the first coach of the New Orleans Jazz in 1974, until he was relieved after a 1-14 record. (Subsequent seasons would absolve Robertson as the Jazz posted many losing records without him.) Stung!Perhaps, the NBA was inspired by the DOJ, maybe not. Bottom line, it looks like the City of Drama is enroute to a second set of acronyms coming down here and taking over one of our institutions. Well, taking over the Hornets at least. Despite a strong start to the season, the plight of George Shinn has continued, and now it looks like the team will be sold, but the only buyer out there is the league. We can take solace in the fact that the name never worked... like having a team called "Jazz" in Utah! Deets. Jazz ReduxMarigny MusingsWhen reading "da paper's" article last week about the ownership issues confronting this city’s pro basketball franchise, I was reminded of New Orleans’ initial foray into the NBA, and how it led to heartbreak for hoops aficionados. Tourney TimeHola Hoops fans. This week the Dance comes to town. Round 1 begins Thursday and continues Friday. Games down here are as follows...
East Regional Kentucky vs. E. Tenn State (1st vs 16th seed) South Regional Notre Dame vs. Old Dominion (6th vs. 11th seed) Round 2 continues on Saturday |
