New Orleans monuments to Confederate heroes and the White League will remain part of the cityscape for a while longer. In the most recent turn of the protracted battle, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeal forbade removal until a lawsuit is resolved.

The long running debate about the fate of four Confederate monuments entered an endgame on Thursday (1.14) morning. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier (of Deepwater Horizon fame) heard arguments in a case challenging the Council’s 6-1 vote to declare New Orleans’ monuments to Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, P.T. Beauregard, and the Crescent City White Leage a nuisance meriting removal.

BP Agrees to 18.7 Billion Dollar Settlement for Deepwater Horizon



The protracted Big Oozy saga is one step closer to a legal resolution. On Thursday (7.02), the Justice Department announced that BP will pay 18.7 billion dollars to settle civil claims related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster including over 6.8 billion dollars to Louisiana.

While locals were transfixed with tales of bomb robots and former political kingpins going to jail, a bevy of lawyers and reporters from all over were hunkered down at the federal courthouse. BP, the feds, the state and other parties began their trial today to determine what the responsible parties have to pay for the Big Oozy.
