On this day in Louisiana history riverboat and Preservation Hall banjo man Emmanuel Sayles was born (1907), and the Grateful Dead was busted on drug charges in New Orleans after a show at The Warehouse. The incident is thought to inspire the classic, "Truckin'" (1970). Don't get busted down on Bourbon Street, check these out: Today's Events: 5/4/11May 4, the date of the first Grammy Awards (1959), The Kent State University student killings by members of Ohio’s National Guard (1970), the first Kiss concert (1976); the birthday of Audrey Hepburn (1929), Keith Haring (1958) and moonman Lance Bass (1979). It was also the date of Sherlock Holmes’ apparent death at Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland (1981). An impressive list of historic events, but nothing beats what’s on today’s NOLA plate: Today's Events: 4/15/11April 15, the day GE formed (1892), when the Titanic sunk (1912), when Bergen-Belson was liberated (1945), when Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line and debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947), when Leonardo da Vinci (1452) and Henry James (1990) were born, and when Greta Garbo (1990) and Joey Ramone (2001) passed. Now here’s some history in the making: |
