Happy Labor Day, New Orleanians! Enjoy the last lazy days of summer with a few laidback events around town. The Allways welcomes a drag reunion, and Santos Bar invites aspiring performers to take to their stage for an open mic event. It's a survival of the funniest at The New Movement, while Instant Opus returns to the Hi-Ho. On this day in 1948, a devastating hurricane with winds up to 90 MPH hit New Orleans, creating extensively damage but thankfully no loss of life. Forecasters began naming hurricanes in 1950. A young Louis Armstrong was arrested on January 1, 1912, for firing a celebratory shot from a pistol into the air at the corner of Perdido and Rampart. On August 13, 1947, Louis Armstrong and his All Stars Band officially debuted in Los Angeles, at Billy Berg’s Night Club. Tonight in the Louisiana music scene, Kermit Ruffins, Papa Grows Funk, and Charmaine Neville are populating their usual venues. Early in the evening, acclaimed author Kiini Ibura Salaam will be uptown at Octavia Books, reading passages from and signing her new collection, Ancient Ancient. Met-heads can check out Abigail Williams at the Hi-Ho with some Monday night red beans, and the Allways will be hosting The Salt Wives, a Klezmer trio.
