Brass Pass: Trombone Shorty Takes Baton from Nevilles at JazzFest

Professor Longhair was looking down from above and two of the Neville Brothers - including a  snappy-dressed, Doo Wop-inclined Aaron - were across the Fair Grounds. Fortunate, then, that a lanky kid from the Treme didn't need any of their help. By the end of his closing set at JazzFest on Sunday, Trombone Shorty was even telling producer Quint Davis what to do.

Jazzfest Cube Shuffle: More Fleetwood Mac, Aaron Neville

Every minute counts at Jazzfest, and the producers apparently saw fit to make some last-minute tweaks to the schedule for the second weekend to allow for the changes. On Saturday, May 4, crowds will get 30 more mintues of Fleetwood Mac than initially planned, and more Aaron Neville on Sunday. Click through to view:

Painting Aaron Neville: JazzFest Poster Artist James Michalopoulos Talks 'Heart Song'

When James Michalopoulos was approached to create the 2013 Jazz Fest poster, he of course accepted. Trading architecture for portraiture, the renowned New Orleans artist momentarily set aside his celebrated shotgun house illustrations to portray Aaron Neville of the Neville Brothers, an exemplar of New Orleans soul and R&B, who also happens to turn 72 years young today.

Aaron Neville, Buckwheat Zydeco Appear on 2013 JazzFest Posters

The JazzFest lineup is out, so now it's time to turn our attention to the art. The Fest released its 2013 posters on Tuesday, featuring a pair of Fest veterans. The official JazzFest poster captures the lacrimonious wailings of Aaron Neville, while this year's Congo Square limited edition depicts Buckwheat Zydeco having a good squeeze.

Louisiana Christmas Classics (Video)

In SoLa,, music has its own seasons also. We have songs for the Saints, songs for Mardi Gras, and of course, we have songs for Christmas. NoDef's staff took to the YouTube to dig out a few of our favorites for y'all this Noel. Representing the Cajun tradition, we found Vin Bruce's "Christmas on the Bayou." Of course, December 25th can not pass without at least one play-through of Aaron Nwville's "Louisiana Christmas Day." Rounding out our selections is a contemporary classsic with 9th Ward flair: Benny Grunch & the Bunch's "12 Y'ats of Christmas." Click through to hear them all.

SNL's 'Maine Justice' Actually About New Orleans (VIDEO)

Once again, Saturday Night Live went down to New Orleans over the weekend. Only this time, it was by way of Maine. Hitting the fine line between our love of reality shows previously documented in City Court with Aaron Neville and love of talking a lot of stuff documented in Bill Hader's turn as James Carville, SNL staged an episode of reality show Maine Justice. Irvin Mayfield Jr. and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra will continue their series of ten concerts to commemorate their 10th anniversary tonight, and they're taking the celebration to one of the world's greatest stages. Mayfield and NOJO will be joined by Aaron Neville, Branford Marsalis and vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Casey Abrams and more for a very special evening at New York City's Carnegie Hall. On this day in history, founding member of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band Tony Spargo (1897) and drummer Johnny Vidacovich was born in New Orleans (1949).

A Handful of JazzFest: 5 to Watch on Saturday, May 5

Today at the Jazz Fest, there's plenty of jazz. But there's also West African blues-rock, outlaw country and that big biker guy with face tats and the angelic voice takin' it to church. Click through for a few free samples:

Today's Events: 1.24.12

Happy Birthday to Aaron Neville. The first family of New Orleans music's man with the golden pipes is 71 years young today. Also on this day in Louisiana history, Tuts Washington (1907) and fiddler Doug "Ragin' Cajun" Kershaw (1931), and were born the New Orleans Saints earned a trip to the Super Bowl, as Garrett Hartley kicked a 40-yard field goal to lift the Saints over the Minnesota Vikings (2010).
