'Katrina Girl' to Bring Her Rescuer to JROTC Ball

One of the most iconic images of Hurricane Katrina was the photograph of three-year-old LaShay Brown smiling widely as she hugged U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Mike Maroney, then a member of a pararescue team who lifted Brown’s family from the roof of their home they had been stranded on September 6, 2005.

Fit & Faithful: Lenten Tips for Week 2

Stay On The Health Kick With Tips from ILoveKickboxing

It’s the second week of the post-Carnival cleanse that the more faithful call Lenten. Those who gave up beer for Lent may struggle with St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, while everyone who swore off sweets might want to steer clear of all the St. Joseph’s Day altars around town. As part of our ongoing series, NoDef is calling upon a different health expert each week to ask for tips for the fit and faithful. By Easter, NoDef will have 40 tips for each day of the season. Laughing Lotus Yoga’s Dana Trixie Flynn started the series last week with some tips to ease people into mindful health practices. This week, Jenny Kern of ILoveKickboxing's New Orleans outpost offers her ten tips for getting in shape as well as some advice on how to stay strong during this booze-and-bread filled weekend.

All In: Thousands of Louisiana Residents Face Gambling Addiction

It seems that there is sometimes a high cost to letting les bons temps roule. A new study published by the Louisiana Department of Health concluded that over a quarter million adult state residents are at risk of gambling addiction.

Fit & Faithful: Lenten Tips for Week 1

Founder of Laughing Lotus Yoga Offers Tips for Getting Fit During Lent

For most locals, New Year resolutions are oft-overlooked in anticipation of Carnival season, with ‘new year, new you’ promises replaced with Lenten sacrifices. While some simply swear off one vice for 40 days and 40 nights, others take this time as an opportunity for holistic self improvement. Each week, NoDef will call upon a different health expert in New Orleans to ask for tips for the fit and faithful. By Easter, NoDef will have 40 tips for each day of the season.

Shia LaBeouf, Traveling Kid, Arrives in NOLA

There are some new traveling kids in town, but they probably won’t be on Lower D demanding your leftovers or your money. Actor Shia LeBeouf as well his collaborating artists Nastja Rönkkö, and Luke Turner landed in New Orleans this weekend as part of their interactive #TakeMeAnywhere project.

POTUS Tries to Reason With Hurricane Season

Hurricane season starts on Wednesday (6.01) officially. In New Orleans, we know that the federal government sometimes ignores this season altogether. However, on Tuesday (5.31), President Obama issued some advice on preparation to the American people.

Fit to be Fried

NOLA is not particularly fit, but it could be worse. That is the finding from the American Fitness Institute (AFI) who released their fitness rankings for America’s 50 largest cities today. New Orleans landed in the 50 spot.

SDT-TV Returning to Fox

Don’t call it a comeback but, Sidney Torres is renewing his relations with the little screen. THR reportedthat Fox picked up ‘APB,’ a television series based on a NYT articles about SDT titled, “Who Runs the Streets of New Orleans.” Unlike, the ill fated Trashmen, the new drama will not be a reality show meaning the Trashanova won’t receive screen time.

Commencement Schedules for NOLA's Universities

For some portions of the City, this time of year is not Fest Season, but Commencement Season. Caps and gowns have already taken flight at Dillard and SUNO, but Tulane, Loyola, UNO, and Xavier will all be distributing sheepskins in the days ahead. With dozens of events, it’s easy to be confused. NoDef has the full schedules for the local schools below.
